TIPS AND TRICKS FOR CLEANING DOG PEE STAINS FROM CARPET
The most common activity of new puppy owners is cleaning puddles all over the apartment. At one point you feel like it will never end and that you will be running after your dog with a rag for the rest of his life. Even grown dogs can have accidents around the house, and you'll go back to being a puppy for a while, trying to figure out how to get dog pee off the carpet, couch, or bed.
Regular washing often does not help and you have to use a heavier caliber to deal with the persistent smell. What are effective weapons in the fight against dog poop stains and odors?
If you have a rug in your home that can't be washed, it's probably your dog's favorite spot. Fortunately, there are a few tricks to get rid of stains, it just depends on how old they are.
If you catch your dog in the act
The best way to clean up puddles is to remove them before they can soak into the fabric. Use a paper towel or an old t-shirt, which absorbs better than a terry towel. Then sprinkle the area with baking soda to neutralize the smell. Leave on for twenty minutes and vacuum.
Several hours old stains
In the case of urine that has already soaked into the carpet, but has not yet completely dried, a homemade solution will help. Its advantage is that you can find the ingredients at home, you can make it for a few pennies, and it is non-toxic and gentle on you and your dog.
How to do it?
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup of white vinegar
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup baking soda
First, aspirate as much urine as possible. Then mix all the ingredients, pour them into a spray bottle and spray on the affected area. If the stain has dried, moisten it with water.
Work the solution into the carpet with a brush or fingers. Leave on for a few minutes and then dry as much as possible. Once completely dry, sprinkle baking soda over the stain and then vacuum to trap any remaining odor.
Dried spots
Even the homemade ecological cleaning agent is short on these stains. Only a heavier caliber of enzymatic cleaner, usually found in pet stores, can help. However, be sure to check the product label to make sure it is non-toxic and safe for pets.
The enzymes in this type of cleaner break down the ammonia and proteins in the urine to neutralize the odor. Follow the directions on the bottle. Enzymatic cleaners usually do not require rinsing and can be safely used on carpets, furniture, hardwood floors, and other porous surfaces where odors may be trapped.
When nothing works
If you have tried everything and none of the methods help, professional carpet cleaning is in order. You can hire a company to come and take care of your carpets, or you can hire a professional cleaning machine.
Caution - avoid steam cleaners that use heat. Applying heat to a urine stain will bond the odors to the carpet fibers and you will never get rid of the unpleasant smell.
